Two of my favorite players --and hopefully they're underrated this year-- just signed with their respective clubs, avoiding arbitration. Well, I am dubbing 2011 as the year of the has been, thinking two things.
- There were a lot of prospects last year who came into their own, and I am guessing owners will not mind spending on Jose Tabata and Carlos Santana.
- Which means undervalued prospects--like Matt Wieters--and underperforming stars--like Chone Figgins--will be dismissed and I will get them at a somewhat discount price.
Well, the guys I am talking about are BJ Upton and Asdrubal Cabrera.
Both these guys have kind of fallen from fantasy grace. Upton, punctuated by his seven-homer 2008 post-season, followed in 2009 with .241-11-55 numbers, and last year went .237-18-62. Upton's walk, and subsequent on-base totals suffered since 2008, but the kid is still just 25 years old. I will bet some awesome numbers lurk under the seemingly disappointing surface.
Droobs was a 21-year-old favorite going .283-3-22 in 2007, then slumped for most of '08 (.259-6-47), then rebounded in '09 (.308-6-68), then struggled with injuries last year going .276-3-29. Again, he is now just 25 (and will be the bulk of 2011) and, Droobs did hit 42 doubles in 2009, with a .361 on-base percentage.
Now, I know to target them. And you know. But, keep it our secret!
