Sunday 21st Jan 2018

The FedEx Championships conclude this week at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. East Lake is a bit of a beast, logging at 7362 yards and featuring a monster 590-yard par 5 ninth hole that will be fun to watch the pros attack.

With a smaller field this time, the pricing was a lot more crunched together, and while reasoning out my roster for the week, I had to consider FedEx leader Jordan Spieth, who has the points this year but no victories under his belt and also last year's winner, Rory McIlroy. Note that Spieth won the contest in 2015, and that McIlroy has been so erratic since returning from his back injury that though I fear he could break back through, I am shying away until he proves it.

For this time, bearing in mind the smaller field and price tags crunched so close to one another, I tried to split the difference, almost following the Fantasy Baseball mantra of picking a dull middle-of-the-road team hoping one of the sextet breaks through with a big win. I am also thinking the guys at the top of the FedEx rankings will be the ones duking it out in the end.

These are the names I like. Don't forget, you can join a foursome playing the DraftKings Weekly Hybrid PGA.

Jon Rahm ($9500): Rahm holds the fifth slot in the FedEx rankings and has 11 top ten finishes this season, and he's on the heels of a fifth place finish at the BMW Championships. Need more?

Hideki Matsuyama ($9000): Matsuyama has three wins, seven top ten finishes and ranks seventh in the overall FedEx, averaging 87.2 points per contest.

Justin Rose ($8900): Rose sits eighth in FedEx rankings, just below Matsuyama, and has eight top ten finishes this season, averaging 72.2 points per contest.

Sergio Garcia ($7900): If local knowledge is worth anything, then Garcia, who has played East Lake under tourney conditions, is the man with ten appearances on the course. Garcia has just three top tens, but has won two of those tourneys and has made 14 of 15 cuts this season, averaging 75.8 points a week.

Matt Kuchar ($7700): Kuchar has ten top tens, has made 21 of 23 cuts, and is averaging 72.3 points. He also ranks 12th in the FedEx rankings.

Daniel Berger ($6900): Five top tens, and a 14th rank in the FedEx finals. Plus, in the end, putting will do it, and Berger is pretty good with that club. And, he is the low-end gamble in this very tight field.
