In a spirited and somewhat volatile second week of the Tout Wars DFS tourney, Scott Pianowski led his squad to a smooth victory, negotiating his way past some of the day's bumpy pitching, riding double-digit point performances from Max Scherzer, Carlos Martinez, Eric Thames and Cameron Rupp to a 161.5 week and top honors for the league.
What made things interesting was no fewer than 11 owners grabbed the services of Scherzer, with nine pairing the Nationals hurler with Joe Biagini, while several turned to Aaron Nola, who at least delivered positive points (8.9) as compared to Biagini, who burned us (yes, me) to the tune of -15.15.
That act in and of itself dropped the point average for the week, with none of us able to cash in on what appeared to be a great matchup facing the Pale Hose, proving once again the only certainty in baseball is uncertainty.
Perhaps the smartest play of all was by second-placer Mike Beller, who scored with Jose Quintana (21.55), the hurler on the winning end of the Biagini fiasco, along with Junior Guerra (9.3), exploiting games from Lorenzo Cain (33), D.J. LeMahieu (29) along with Willson Contreras (20) for a solid 157.85 finish, while the interminable DFS machine known as Derek Carty slammed into third with 140.1 total points. Note that Derek did pair Nola with Scherzer, but it clearly mattered little.
Cycle III, Week 3 commences this Friday. You can check the standings here. Log into the site every Friday and we each provide a couple of picks we like for the evening.
For the archivists, the Touts play a daily game against one another every Friday at DraftKings. Lord Zola is the curator of this fine mess, which breaks the season into five four-week cycles, with the two teams garnering the most points over each advancing to a final championship that includes the Tout collecting the most points over all 20 weeks.
Remember to go to the Tout Wars site for our Friday picks. And, tune into the Tout Wars Hour on the FNTSY network, hosted by me, with Justin Mason and featuring Lord Z every Thursday night at 8 PM ET.
