With only two games tonight, the pickings are slim, but I’m sure I can convince you to lean on the players I mention, and benefit from those selections. The first game of the night has the Washington Capitals headed to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, but I’m not expecting much love in this match-up of two of the hotter teams in the NHL and fierce division rivals. The second game of the night takes place out in the desert with the Oilers of Edmonton taking on the young and sporadic Arizona Coyotes. Wednesday is always a light night in the NHL scheduling department, but we can always make it work, so let’s look over these picks.
Leon Draisaitl ($6300, Edmonton Oilers): I’m sure this is about the 70th time I’ve gone with Leon, but when the cash keeps coming my way by picking him, I’ll keep with the hot composite stick. With a goal and three helpers in the Oilers last two, Draisaitl is reliable, and with 30 points on the season, second to McDavid’s 40 points, Leon is in a good spot. A trip to face the Coyotes always makes a fantasy drafter smile like I am as I write this. Arizona is 28th in goals for along with the same 28th ranking in goals against. Edmonton is 6th in power play success rate at 22% while the Yotes PK is 23rd in the NHL at 78.8%. Play your Oilers tonight.
Matt Niskanen ($4600, Washington Capitals): Not the first name that comes to mind when speaking of offensive defensemen, but Niskanen has had a mini-streak going on of late. With two goals and three assists in the Caps last five games, this is a welcome happening for Washington. One of the most productive teams in the NHL last year, the Caps have not brought the pain so far this season, and if second pairing defensemen lighting up the scoresheet is what finally gets this very powerful team turned around, then I’m all for it. Also, playing the very hot Flyers, who are 8-1-1 in their last ten games but are dead last in goals against (102), may solve the energy crisis in Washington's sticks.
