UEFA Championship League (CL) Group Stage Matchday 3 is scheduled for today and tomorrow. Our recommendations for your fantasy lineups are below.
Note that DraftKings offers UEFA Championship League Group Stage contests for both days. Hurry up, DraftKings contests for today lock at 2:45 PM Eastern Time.
Recommendations for your lineup are based in part on the odds set by English bookmakers for each game. We recognize that those guys could be awfully wrong sometimes. But then again, that’s soccer and that’s why we love the game.
The standard lineup of each DraftKings contest has one goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders, two forwards and one utility player.
Lineup suggestions for Tuesday, October 18 matches
We are certain that today Real Madrid will beat Legia Warsaw. Try to field as many Real players as you can fit under the cap. I also like the Foxes against FC Copenhagen.
Goalkeepers (choose one): Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)
Defenders (choose two): Kamil Glik (Monaco), who scored for Monaco last time, Andrea Barzagli (Juventus), Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund), Alex Telles (FC Porto)
Midfielders (choose two): Sami Khedira (Juventus), Luka Modric (Real Madrid), Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), one of my favorite players when I field English Premier League fantasy teams on DraftKings, Hector Herrera (FC Porto)
Forwards (choose two): Islam Slimani (Leicester City), Jesus Corona (FC Porto), Luciano Vietto (Sevilla FC), Paulo Dybala (Juventus)
Utility (choose one): Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspur)
Lineup suggestions for Wednesday, October 19 matches
A day that is much easier to forecast: we know that Arsenal and Atletico Madrid will win. I am high on Napoli too, even if the team lost its best striker. Time to stay away from Manchester City?
Goalkeepers (choose one): Petr Cech (Arsenal), Marquinhos (PSG)
Defenders (choose two): Thiago Alcantara (Atletico Madrid), Mats Hummel (Bayern Munchen), Kalidou Koulibali (Napoli)
Midfielders (choose two): Angel Di Maria (PSG), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Arjen Robben (Bayern Munchen), Nicolás Gaitán (Atletico Madrid)
Forwards (choose two): Edinson Cavani (PSG), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munchen), Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli)
Utility (choose one): Luis Suarez (Barcelona), Lucas Moura (PSG), Moussa Dembélé (Celtic)
You must have noticed that not all of the above names are top players. The reason is simple: there is a mix of salary levels to allow you to fit your lineup under the dreaded salary cap. Due to an interesting twist, DraftKings qualifies several players as both forward and midfielder. Unfortunately, that may not help your salary cap, as all of these players are quite expensive. However, one strategy is to pick relatively inexpensive defenders to limit your salary exposure. Potentially, you could scroll all the way down the players list and field the least expensive defenders, even if they may not be featured on the pitch by their teams. By following this strategy, you may be able to accommodate the best strikers on your fantasy team.
