For soccer fans, Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Championship league games come second only to the excitement of watching the Soccer World Cup. The second leg of the Round of 16 begins today and DraftKings features several leagues that are waiting for your lineup.
Here are some random thoughts about the upcoming games and players to include in your DraftKings lineup:
Tuesday 3/8: Wolfsburg – Gent (first leg 3-2)
Given the result of the first leg, this game may end in a tie score of 0-0. If you are inclined toward having a player from one of these two teams in your lineup, then you should look into adding Wolfsburg’s Julian Draxler.
Tuesday 3/8: Real Madrid - Roma (first leg 2-0)
Real Madrid is simply too strong. I doubt that Roma can even score, hence Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Keilor Navas and the team’s entire defense, from Sergio Ramos on, are good options.
Wednesday 3/9: Chelsea – Paris Saint Germain (first leg 1-2)
Will we see the same high pace game that we saw in Paris? PSG is the favorite to pass, but I think that the final result is wide open. PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimović and Edinson Cavani are too expensive for my taste, but you should consider both Marco Verratti and Angel Di Maria for your team’s midfield. Chelsea will attack, hence Diego Costa may do well, but let’s not forget that Baba Rahman (defense) impressed during the first leg.
Wednesday 3/9: Zenit – Benfica (first leg 0-1)
Benfica scored in extra time, but that’s only because Zenit spent 90 minutes defending. At home and down 0-1, Zenit will open up, but I still doubt that Benfica will make it to the next round. Hence, your team may benefit from Zenit’s Alex Witsel (midfield) and Hulk (offense).
Tuesday 3/15: Atletico Madrid – PS Eindhoven (first leg 0-0)
The first leg ended in a standstill. My gut tells me that Atletico Madrid will prevail. Ferdinando Torres did not play in the first game, but he should in the next one. His salary is reasonable, so he could be a strong candidate to make your team.
Tuesday 3/15: Manchester City – Dynamo Kyiv (first leg 3-1)
Manchester City may not even field their top team. Given this uncertainty and with so many unknowns, I would stay away from this game.
Wednesday 3/16: Arsenal – Barcelona (first leg 0-2)
Barcelona is too strong and too expensive. However, if you are dying to have one of its players on your team, I suggest their goalkeeper, Mark-Andre ter Stegen. In other words, there is slim to no chance for Arsenal to score.
Wednesday 3/16: Bayern Monaco – Juventus (first leg 2-2)
Juventus came back from an 0-2 deficit to tie the game. This is giving the Italians a sliver of hope for the return game. Not a chance. Bayern will prevail. But it will be a battle. I would not field Robert Lewandovski. Juventus defenders, especially Andrea Barzagli, who you may want to consider for your team, put a clamp on him. However, Bayern has many guns and Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben will be difficult to contain. Arturo Vidal had an interesting role in the first game where he guarded the back of the midfield. If you are looking for crosses into the area from a midfielder, Vidal is your man.
