Yesterday was what the Weather Channel called the hottest day of the year nationally, and today promises to be hotter, so let's all take our hot hands to the Mastersball 50/50 Challenge.

The fun thing with starters today is "Who are these guys?" Zack Godley? Ariel Pena? Ah, the joy of the call-ups, and though rookie pitchers have done pretty well as a rule this year, I am shying from all of them.

I do like James Shields ($7200) at home against the Rockies, and also Collin McHugh (($6100) twirling against the Athletics in Oakland, a nice pitchers park facing a team that swings the stick.

As for hitters, it may be hot over most of the country, the Reds and Pirates look like they may have some precipitation, so bear that in mind. With J.A. Happ facing Keyvius Sampson there could be a lot of runs, too (no matter how hot Happ has looked over his last six outings).

Still, I am looking at the Braves and Freddie Freeman ($5600) and A.J. Pierzynski ($3800) to have fun with 2-7, 9.00 David Buchanan, and also like Pablo Sandoval ($4400) and Brock Holt ($3500) going against Drew Hutchison.

Note Mastersball will be playing a Fantasy Score football contest as well. You can play against the other Mastersballers and me at Fantasy Score and follow me @lawrmichaels
