AFL Prospect Update

Well it doesn’t take long for a trade in baseball to shift values – both at the MLB level and for fantasy players. Here are some recent winners and losers from trades and signings:

Loser – Chris McGuiness, 1B, CLE tumbles to #7 on my impact for 2013 list with Cleveland’s signing of Mark Reynolds. I still think the Indians will keep McGuiness on the MLB roster although a trade with Texas to get the ability to move him to AAA is a possibility. The only way McGuiness regains a lot of value is to have a hot spring and for the Indians to believe that moving Reynolds to 3B to replace Lonnie Chisenhall gives them a better lineup.

Winner – Didi Gregorius, SS, now Arizona – the former Cincinnati farmhand, off a very good showing in the Arizona Fall League (where DBacks GM Kevin Tower saw him play and said he reminded him of a young Derek Jeter) goes to Arizona in the three way trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cleveland. Gregorius whose defense is already major league caliber will be given the opportunity to win the starting shortstop job, competing with Cliff Pennington (yes Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald are still there but neither is considered an everyday player so Gregorius would have to fail to hit to start the year in the minors). Even if he were sent to AAA Reno to start the year I think he is up fast enough to have value in draft & hold leagues as an extra middle infielder.

Loser – Trevor Bauer, P, CLE – not from this year’s AFL class but still pitching in Cleveland will be tougher than in Arizona.

Winners – Cleveland Indian fans that get to see Bauer and his very intriguing pre-game warm up routine and see some pitching gems during his stay there.

Loser – Kyle Kaminska, P, now Boston who got him as a PTBNL. Still I doubt he gets a chance to crack the Red Sox rotation this spring but is worth watching (although not drafting unless you are in a league with extremely deep minor league rosters).

Here are my revised 2013 Impact lists:

Impact Hitters for 2013 (Dec 12 revision)

  1. 1. Didi Gregorius, SS, AZ
  2. 2. Nate Frieman, 1B, HOU
  3. 3. Kolten Wong, 2B, STL
  4. 4. Mike Zunino, C, SEA
  5. 5. Jonathan Singleton, 1B/OF, HOU
  6. 6. Billy Hamilton, OF, CIN (perhaps most impact but he needs to learn to play the outfield so unless there is an injury to newly acquired Shin-Soo Choo or Jay Bruce or he gets a late season callup to pinch run I see him a star at Triple-A in 2013)
  7. 7. Chris McGuiness, 1B, CLE

Impact Pitchers for 2013

  1. 1. Kyle Gibson, Minnesota
  2. 2. Mark Montgomery, NY Yankees
  3. 3. Robbie Erlin, San Diego
  4. 4. Justin Marks, Kansas City
