In the end, the Tout Wars Daily Championship went down to the same two names who dominated the scene. And Todd Zola and Derek Carty were there again, finishing 1-2 in the eight-team championship last week with Carty squeezing past Zola, 145.35 to 140.6.

Carty rode Jimmy Nelson's 37.5-point performance past the pack, though things were worth of a sweat and nail bite as the final team jockeying occurred. But, to show how close these two exceptional players were, Todd beat Carty overall by 3.2 points, 2341.5 to 2338.3 after 20 weeks of H2H with Carty turning the final tables, beating Lord Z by a total of 1.45 points, 2483.55 to 2482.1 in an incredibly ciose finish where a walk and run would have changed the outcome.

The results among the eight finalists for the last week of play were as follows:

Name Total Points
 Derek Carty  145.35
 Todd Zola  140,6
 Howard Bender  107.85
 Jeff Erickson  100.2
 Tim Heaney  87.7
 Lenny Melnick  66
 Jeff Boggis  59.95
 Andrea Lamont   0

But, the fun is not over with the Touts now going at it again in Fout Wars, named for the former Chargers signal caller, a weekly contest sponsored by our friends at Fantrax. Starting next week, we will be reviewing that contest, and beginning Saturday will be looking at the DFS picks we like for the Sunday slate.

Jeff Boggis put up a mighty 159.5 points last week, powered by Giancarlo Stanton's big night, to win the the final weekly Tout Daily cycle, and Phil Hertz (130.4) made a noble try to squeeze into the finals. But in the end, Tim Heaney grabbed the final solo ticket with 460.42 points while Derek Carty eeked out a second win, squeezing by Tim with 462.8 points.

Todd Zola and Carty led the overall pack with Todd earning a third ticket to the finals, posting an overall 2341.5, again just nosing out Carty, who banged out a second-best 2338.3.

In the end, eight finalists, good for 12 total entries, made it to the finals out of 27 Touts who participated, with the list looking like this:

Name Total Points
 Todd Zola   2341.5
 Derek Carty   2338.3
 Howard Bender  2241.5
 Andrea Lamont  2205.6
 Jeff Boggis  2108.5
 Tim Heaney  2021.5
 Lenny Melnick  1924.4
 Jeff Erickson  1885.94

The finals do begin this week, and with football season beginning, the DFS shift will move to that each week. But, the Tout DFS season is still not done, so stay tuned.

The regular season Daily contest winds down at DraftKings tonight and the overall scoreboard can be viewed here.

Derek Carty returned to Tout Wars Daily domination in Period 5, Week 2, riding Carlos Carrasco and his ten strikeout, eight inning performance for 39.6 points, along with Rich Hill (22.7) and Yoenis Cespedes (23) for 155.3 points, getting contributions from every player on his roster.

Who else would finish second but Todd Zola, who also rostered Hill and Carrasco, generating points with Mikie Mahtook (19) and also getting production from all his selections in posting 138.3 points, while Jeff Zimmerman grabbed bronze for the week with 133.3, also on the strength of the Carrasco/Hill/Cespedes troika.

Tim Heaney still leads Period 5 overall with 270.15, followed by Steve Gardner (257.5), and then BBHQ's Ray Murphy who has 250.25, while overall Murphy has quietly moved into fourth place with 2019.3 points.

Of course Zola leads the overall drive for the total points ticket with 2156.4 points, followed by Carty (2112.15), Murphy, Howard Bender (2118.95) and then Andrea Lamont (2003.7).

Period 5, Week 3 takes place tonight. For the archivists, the Touts play a daily game against one another every Friday at DraftKings. Lord Zola is the curator of this fine mess, which breaks the season into five four-week cycles, with the two teams garnering the most points over each advancing to a final championship that includes the Tout collecting the most points over all 20 weeks.

The overall scoreboard can be viewed here.

In a total squeaker, Rotobuzzguy Howard Bender slipped past Derek Carty to take Cycle III, Period 5 with 138.9 points to Carty's 138.25 on the strength of Dallas Keuchel (23.35), Zack Godley (17.4), and Jose Altuve (22) to take weekly honors as we head into the final league match-up in anticipation of the final September contest which will determine the champ.

Carty was able to exploit Matt Moore (20.9) along with the surprising Nicky Delmonico (32) in addition to Keuchel to drive his squad while Derek Van Riper took the bronze for the week with 135.25 points, also rostering Keuchel, Moore and Delmonico.

That puts Carty, who already has one ticket to the finals, in the lead going into the closing week with 374.3 points, followed by Van Riper with 369.15 while Tim Heaney holds down third with 345 points.

As far as the overall points champ, who also receives a ticket to the finals, Carty holds a slim lead with 2250.4 points over Lord Zola who logs in with 2238.65, making the dominant duo the favorites to take said honors, with Bender (2157.85) and Andrea Lamont (2106.95) hoping for a late boost to take the overall title. Note that all four--Carty, Zola, Bender and Lamont--have tickets to the finals thanks to their savvy and consistent play this season.

Rotowire's Tim Heaney forged forth with a solid lead for Period 5 of Tout Daily with a 164.25 point total driven by Kevin Gausman (27.35), Brian Dozier (33) and Marwin Gonzalez (23) along with a solid team where only three of his ten picks earned three points or less, and all generated points.

Heaney's Rotowire mate Jeff Erickson finished a distant second (143.8), also fueled by Dozier along with a strong performance from Jacob Faria (25.9) with BaseballHQ's Ray Murphy nudging behind Erickson for a third place finish with 143.25 on the strength of big days from Gausman and Dozier, but also a 30-point game from Giancarlo Stanton.

That puts the troika ahead as we drive for the final ticket with Todd Zola (2018) and Andrea Lamont (1982.1) leading the overall pack in the contest which does indeed award a couple of extra Golden Tickets to the top two overall point getters.

Period 5, Cycle 2 continues this week. For the archivists, the Touts play a daily game against one another every Friday at DraftKings.
